It may be surprising to learn that Ansen Seale’s photography is not altered in any way. This is the way his unique slit-scan camera sees the world. It captures the passage of time through the subject’s movement (or lack of movement) revealing a “hidden reality”. The camera itself repeatedly records single columns of pixel information over time, which differs from the standard snapshot that records a grid of pixel data at one specific moment. Instead of recording two dimensions, it registers only one dimension that changes with each exposure over time. A single slit-scan image captures hundreds of exposures each second to build the horizontal dimension of the image over time. In this way, Seale has changed the rules of traditional photography, creating a series of images that redefine our notion of reality.
