Born in New Jersey, Tall grew up in Florida. She studied at University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, BFA, l974, and at University of Miami, MFA, 1995. Her present studio is Southern California, where she creates her large-scale sculpture and paintings, and teaches art classes.
Cheryl Tall’s primary medium is clay, coil built into large figurative sculptures and wall pieces. She also works with mixed media, oil and acrylic painting, and printmaking.
Tall’s work focuses on the relationships between people and their surroundings, especially their homes or workplaces. Her subject matter often includes architectural and figurative elements. Influences include Surrealism, Expressionism, Pop Art, and Funk Art, Romanesque Medieval art, folk art, mythology and Primitive Art. Influential artists include Robert Arneson, Andy Goldsworthy, Viola Frey, Adrian Arleo, Paul Klee, Giorgio De Chirico, Oskar Kokoschka and Giselbertus.
Her work has been published in many books: The Ceramic Design Book, Low Fire Surface Design, Making Marks, 500 Figures, 500 Animals, 500 Dolls, Confrontational Ceramics, Sole Purpose. She has had feature articles in many magazines, including Studio Potter, Ceramic Monthly, Clay Times, Ceramics Art and Perception, Pottery Making Illustrated, Sculptural Pursuit, and American Craft Magazines. She has won numerous awards, is in museum collections, and shows her work internationally.
Some of her collectors include The Ceramic Research Center, University of Arizona, Tempe, AZ; Gangjin International Ceramic Museum, Korea; Brevard Museum of Art, Melbourne, FL; Burroughs Chapin Museum of Art, SC; Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL; Munchkin Int., Beverly Hills, CA, Lorenz Advertising Agency, San Diego, CA , Penn State College, PA, and Palomar College, San Marcos, CA.
Her art has been influenced by travel and participation in Creative Art Residencies in Canada, Japan, Greece, France, Hungary, Korea, Mexico, England and the United States. Most recently, she was invited to exhibit her work at the International Celadon Festival, Gangjin, Korea.
