Ambient

July 7 - August 9, 2008
Reception: Tuesday, July 8, 6 - 8pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Ambient” a sculpture, video and photography exhibition by current students and recent alumni featuring contemporary approaches to interactive and time-based works. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include Joshua Kirsch, Yuko Kobayashi, Kathleen Mallaney and Sara Pomerance.

Joshua Kirsch uses symmetry and geometric precision in Concentricity, a series of aluminum and stainless steel interactive sculptures. Each work features an array of electric sensors that translate the viewer’s movement into a succession of blue, green, red or white light. Kirsch is a student in the BFA Fine Arts Department.

Yuko Kobayashi’s video Portrait of the Night uses New York City night imagery to meditate on real and imagined realities. Beginning with a soft-focus aerial view of lower Manhattan, the perspective continually recedes until the scene transforms into abstract patterns. Kobayashi is a recent alumnus of the BFA Fine Arts Department.

Using the body as her fundamental material, Kathleen Mallaney’s series of photographs apply gesture, action and movement to examine gender and identity. Mallaney is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.

Sara Pomerance’s videos study well-meaning intentions gone awry. Using her family’s behavior and coping mechanisms as raw material, the artist constructs characters that offer a critique of social mannerisms and routines. Pomerance is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
