I grew up in an extended family. There was a steady succession of Muslim and Christian relatives who lived with us while finishing their studies or looking for a job and other opportunities. My parents also had a garments business, and a few workers stayed with us, some of them for more than two decades. A large house like that inhabited by Iliganons, Siquijodnons, Bol-anons and Maranaos is always rich with information, stories – and tension. At times conflicts would arise, but they were always resolved, perhaps due to the intercession of my parents but more because they created an environment where people can respect each other. I found it difficult therefore to reconcile my life in the house and the turbulent life in the Muslim-Christian landscape outside.

My art is concerned with conflicts, the conflict between the traditional and the contemporary, the pure and the adulterated, the past and the future. My works comment on the clash between beliefs, races, cultures, generations, and ideas. My art sometimes deals with death and violence.

But always, my art deals with beauty. There is the obviously beautiful, and there is the mysteriously elusive one. The eye and the mind must patiently direct the hand to reconstruct both in the artwork.

I use a wide range of materials, techniques and styles. I think a material has a greater purpose than its mundane one. A material and the way it is used should fit the subject.
