About
Saint Olaf College, Northfield, MN, BA: Studio Art / French, 1991-1992. Hamline University, Saint Paul, MN, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), 2000. Johnny started drawing and taking photographs when he was a child and never really stopped. He studied Art and French in college, and eventually became an ESL instructor in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. He enjoys other cultures and languages, and helps immigrants and refugees learn how to speak, read and write English. Johnny spent much of the 1990s songwriting, playing guitar and singing in various rock bands in and around the Twin Cities. Around 1993 he began documenting the stunning architectural changes in Minneapolis, a project of thousands of film photographs which continues to this day. Digital photography has afforded him greater flexibility to explore other creative interests. For example, the images in the "Color Streak Series" are indeed photographs, and are not digitally manipulated. They are long-exposure photos taken in low-light settings, they're not created in a program such as Photoshop. The camera is pointed at various light sources (fire, incandescent, fluorescent, neon, LEDs) and moved around and used as a drawing tool, creating colorful abstract images as the lines of light blur and overlap. The challenge in creating them has been to take what is seemingly random or haphazard, and make interesting compositions, just as one would do in a painting.
