About
Since the early 1980s, my work has involved the creation of conceptually based sociopolitical paintings and drawings. In 1992 I began adding text by hand onto paintings. Hand written language has now become a very prominent feature in my work. In my work, I deconstruct the American dream, and religious belief that refers to a mental state in which faith is placed in a creed related to the supernatural, sacred, or divine that is brain washed into our society like fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and lullabies that are part of our childhood and adult culture.
My work also addresses gender roles, assignment, and the fragility of family dynamics, as well as violence and the underlying threads of violence and danger that trap American society.
The texts provide clues to content and interpretation.
Painting has come to me like destiny. I didn't make a conscious choice. It has become an integral part of life, it's my soul's breath. I devote myself to searching for truth.
The phenomenon of migration in the mind has always been part of the human... experience. In recognition of this, my art is a testimony to my part in this journey, and I have made the concept of "reconstruction" the focus of my creative process. The oil painting has been the ideal media to re-create the experience of building a habitat with the fragments, belongings and memories that everyone carries with them. Symbols such as fish, dogs water falls, entryways, haven and hell painted from a rich earthly color alive with nature and living animals to a bright cartoon like vision of god are important aspects of my work fragments of textures and layers of colors (the depth that we all have below the surface) have been a recurring theme in my recent work.
