About
My artwork explores the notion of perception, both visual and psychological. Referring to the visual aspect of my work, I do not simply mean that my art is of the “visual” category, but rather that the content of my work addresses the act of looking. Much of my work offers a glimpse into the life of the subject. I wish to create a sense in the viewer that he or she is not just looking at a painting on a wall, but also catching a glimpse into the life of the subject depicted. I do this in order to create a feeling of Intimacy or familiarity between by painting and the viewer.
The other facet of perception, psychological perception, implies a mental concept of oneself and others, or identity. More specifically, as far as my art is concerned, gender identity. I am fascinated with the study of gender as a sociological institution and an anthropological phenomenon: how it is created, how it's digested, how it changes over time, and also the ways in which in endures. Of particular interest to me is the gender reinforcement embedded in everyday language, the gender corroboration in the passing on of tradition, and representation in advertising. Gender is a complex concept, and it is hard to set objective rules and even opinions for something that has so many exceptions. For this reason, my allusions to gender tension are subtle. Although my messages are subtle, my hope is that they do not reinforce existing perceptions of gender, but rather point out the many way ideas about gender are transmitted in everyday experience. I explore these themes through realism and representation of the figure, concentrating on the different ways in which femininity is depicted in classical figure painting versus more modern art.
My work is not shock art, but my art is not meant to offer an image to be immediately internalized either. Through the avenue of visual perception, my work explores gender identity. More specifically, how gender perception in a western society influences how we view ourselves and how we view others, and what we perceive to be our roles and expectations as members of a certain gender group.
