About
TOYS & OTHER STUFF
I believe the first time I painted a toy was about the same time I started painting recycled items. I was at a thrift store when I saw this “Parmesan mouse” and I got this flash about this mouse getting pimped out. Snatched the sucker up and started painting. I was like my God, some one would put this ugly thing on their counter then there should be some one out there that would want “Pimp Mouse” some where in their house. I painted some more things; a clock, this boy and girl thing, a toy bank and I was then asked to be in a show at “Outsiders & Others” in Minneapolis, called the “Seven Deadly Sins”. Having studied some of these sins up close and personal and working on found objects I married the two ideas together. I sold four out of seven deadly sins and one went to a well-known museum curator. Two of the sculptures had toys on them. I found the vinyl easy to paint on and I liked holding the objects as I worked on them and the detailing. It is a nice break from when I work on canvass or glass sculptures. Some of these are sold, but if you like something give me a shout.

| Groovy. Glad you like the X-Mas party. There is a place outside of Flagstaff,Az on old RT66. HERE IT IS is the name of this decades old curio shop(It was surreptitiously featured in the Pixar film CARS a few years back). HERE IT IS features silhouettes of jackrabbits in repose as part of the their eye grabbing advertising. But inside its kitsch heaven. Souvenirs fit to fill the tomb of any american pharaoh. Keychains, t-shirts,postcards,ash trays, rubber tomahawks. But they also have a most odd collections of plaster of paris figurines. Rabbits, Jesus, cats,Mary, whatever. Hecho in Mexico I guess. They are hollow. I have used a few in art installations. These objects are most fragile. There is a way to "stabilize" such plaster items. The foam insulation in a can found at Home Depot. I spray some inside the base of the figures. (Its messy stuff and you have to wear rubber gloves.) Sit them upside down so the excess expanding foam comes out of the quarter size hole in the now inverted base. Leave it cure for a couple of days. When the process is over these statues are "solid" but lightweight. You can paint them and they are strange to begin with. Probably more than you wanted to know. I got carried away. |
