About
The pseudonym, 'scrapworm,' names an allegorical human perspective on witnessing the passage of time and figuratively identifies with subtle entanglements of living systems' dynamics. We are all really 'scrapworms', winding paths through the collective composts of time, thought, matter, space, society, culture, and the webbed associative implications of such concepts. We collect parts of the overwhelming sensory intellectual experience of external reality based on our uniquely personal aspects. We perceptively meander routes through such mental accumulations, each of us processing and creating uniquely 'new' things.
Blurring borders between the real, the imaginary, and the symbolic; my art practice re-examines traditional existential concepts from various angles, creating layered 'nether space' open-metaphoric maps. As timeless and/or reflectively time-folding archives, the invented spaces, surfaces, and sculptures explore media, information, and visual culture as socio-psychological language and ethno-archeological artifact. I craft immersive scenarios that let the viewers make their own associative leaps of active participation.
I include thematic examples from the larger world ‘document’ (of which I experience the landscapes and artifacts) as scrap fragments that I find ironic in coexistence, ‘beautiful’ in balance, sad in calm emptiness, terrifying in violent inundation, and (especially in found print materials) satirical in portrayal. My work envisions imploded (post-apocalyptic) culture using recorded and ‘remaining’ examples of past and current (cyclically reinvented and recurring) tragedy. I live the 'scrapworm' allegory --assembling, reflecting, and processing. With the 'scraps' I collect, I create abstract narrative contexts that respond to my deepest questions. Merging mediums and manipulations, I examine associative ideas and assimilative 'memory' within affecting structures.
Creative practice can be a material force which alters, in some sense makes, the very things it attempts to know. scrapworm strives to represent multidimensionality and interconnectedness/entanglement in the context of apocalypse culture -
