About
Artist Statement:
"Since college I have worked exclusively in pen and ink, primarily using stippling. Each drawing can take anywhere from 8 to 40 hours and contains thousands upon thousands of tiny dots. Stippling creates shades and textures in a way that evokes images to me. I start dotting and an image reveals itself before my eyes. Then it is my job to coax it out of the page of others to see. As far as subject matter, I tend to draw human faces that are misshapen or deformed, usually with skin problems. I think the inspiration for these faces came from a stint I had taking mass transit in Los Angeles when I first moved here. My car died and I was so frustrated with cars and the escalating oil crisis, I decided to take advantage of public transportation. It was actually a pretty positive experience but the thing that really struck me was the wide range of human forms on the buses. There are more creatively shaped humans walking amongst us than I could ever dream up."
